Merikarvianjoki 31.7.
Vyrtsi

First we fished Lankoski area, where it was quite. Then downstream, where I had two contacts with rainbows just in twilight time. The other one I caught up to my net, it took a long time to stimulate the fish, although I tried to get it up so fast as possible. Once again we found out, what too warm water temperature makes to fishes.

Water was in summer level, that means pleasant to fish, but air temperature was high enough. At least you did not freeze while wading. We had no contacts with searun salmons or seatrouts, but local fishermen told us, that had had many contacts a few days ago, when the water level was rising. Let us hope, that we have a nice salmon autumn!

Porras, Ilmetynjoki 31.07
JuhaL
and Sari-Anne

A long hot day. We casting every now and then, only a finger size perch took our lure. In the evening at nine o'clock we visited a small rapid area, and caught a beautiful 30 cm trout, a real pearl of the river.

Turku, Halinen 30.7.
JaniO

One hour "eveningfishing", saldo 6 perches. I saw two huge tailings of searun trouts, but had no contacts with them.

Konkamaeno 25.-26.7.
TomiL and Jori

Fishing graylings in the "arm" of Finland. We have found a bit bigger fishes as earlier, but not yet over 45 cm. The biggest trout is now 43 cm. We have fished in this week now the following rapid areas Peera-, Karjalan-, Saari- and Lammasrapids. Even if there are no insects on the surface and no tailing fishes, we have caught most of the fishes with dryflies and surface pupa flies. The weather and water conditions have been optimal for fishing.

Tammela, Kuivajarvi 27.7
KariA and Timo

We learned about yesterday and went trolling later at 21.30.
Two hours of fishing and the catch was 9 zanders, of which  4 too small and 5 fishes 42 - 54 cm.

Tammela, Kuivajarvi 26.7
KariA and Kake

Trolling zanders from 18.00 to 00.00 o'clock. In the beginning we had to change lures all the time, no contacts with fishes. At about 22.00 began to happen, in 45 min 12 zanders, 1 perch and 1 pike. Zanders were apparently two different ages,, 6 pcs 32 - 34 cm and 6 pcs 42 - 46 cm. We trolled the same area still one hour, but nothing happened, the hit was over as fast as it started.

Merikarviariver 26.-27.7.
JaniO

On friday the waterlevel was still rising. Even the natural bed of Lankoski (=rapid) was almost impossible to wade. I fished 3,5 hours, saldo a grayling 34 cm.

Saturday I fished about one our in Puukoski, then I was fed up the flooding river.

Kummaeno, 20.-24.7.
OlliT,
Pasi and Arto

South of Kummaeno many trouts, biggest ones 35 cm. From the lakes about 15 graylings, of which 7 over 40 cm. Dryflies were the best ones, but biggest ones we caught with Leech.

Merikarviariver 25.7.
JaniO

The water is getting higher and higher, wading in Puukoski (= one rapid area) is almost impossible. I fished 1,5 h in daytime and again in the evening. Saldo: two small trouts. It is wiser to take photos as to fish, and at least more pleasant.

Konkamaeno 22.-24.7.
TomiL
and Jori

Almost one hundred graylings. Only one was over 40 cm, a lot of fishes 30-35 cm. At least Ismo's Puppa has fished ok. The waterlevel is in optimum.

Merikarviariver 24.7.
JaniO

About two hours of fishing. Waterlevel is really high. Saldo: 32 cm grayling and 38 cm rainbow trout

Teno 24.7.
HarriM

Water is warm and hard to catch salmons. Flyfishermen caught many grilses. My results after hours of rowing was male salmons 2,8 kg and 8,4 kg with Wayla-wobbler in Pahtarapid in Vetsikko. Hannu and Arto caught a 2 kg grilse in Uulansuvanto with  Wayla, too.

Special in our fishing was, that we caught our fishes with wobblers. At this time of the season few fishes are caught by rowing and, when caught, normally with flies. We were lucky to choose right colours and swim of the wobbler, this broke the nerves of the fishes and they hit.

There is huge amount of fishes in Teno at this moment. You can see tailing fishes all over, grilses and really big ones, too. I had one big one on, but it spit the wobbler out of its mouth. When the gets a bit cooler, there will be a salmon festival in Teno. So man, go north, it is worth of coming.

USA, eastcoast, week 28
JakeK

It is about two weeks, when I last time reported fishing from here. Here is what has happened since then:

Two weeks ago in Sandy Hookista was good catches of small blue-fishia. Now have been so busy in working, that I have done only one trip in the middle of the week: fresh air, more experience and asmal flounder was my catch. Once again I ran following a school of flying terns, but nothing hit on my flies. When I walked back, I saw a sign on the shore: Everyone who is crosses this line is in danger to be shot. Perhaps I have believe the safety borders of local seaguard basement are not to be crossed :-).

13-14th july we went to Cape Codissa, south of Boston, to fish striper with Jari M., who had contacted me some weeks ago and asked possibilities to fish in these areas. Finally we found each other and went to a local fishing store to ask what is going on. They recommended to take a boat to one long half island and fishing there. In Sunday we hired a local ktl (= fishing guide) to tutor us in fishing stripers in shallow waters. In saturday we caught a small striper each and I had a small blues, too. All fishes took a small Sandeel imitation. Sunday was cloudy, pitty, it disturbed fishing, because in shallow water you have to fish  the stripers with seen and served method. Simply, you could not see the underwater life. The guide was helping us, but when I saw a fish, it had already seen me and put the turbo on and swimmed away. We both had pure NF, but the guide had his 250 bucks, so at least one of us was happy. Striperfishing in shallow water is really interesting, this I have to try again by myself when I have time to do it.

Next weekend I took first time on this continent the spinnfish equipments in my hand. We had early ago made an agreement with my boss to make a fishing trip, while I am staying here in USA. Because he is not an eager fisherman, we decided to make a trip on a so called party-boat. At six o'clock to the harbour, about 50 men on board, a while driving out and then bottom angling with a heavy rod and reel. The lure was about 150 g leadball and the hook 3/0 circle hook. The bait was a slice of octopus or a small fish. We tryed to fishsea-bassesjnda flounders. The first ones size about finnish perches in the Baltic and the later a local flounder species, which grow up pretty big. The fishing was interesting, when the schools of fishes were on the site, but boring when they did not. Minimum for seabasses was14.5 ". Our four persons group caught 15 legal size fishes and about double so much minors. We did not catch any flounders, but they took on board some nice size of fishes.

After the trip we went to my bosses house to make filees out of them. My boss is originally from Korea, so he served us unsalted raw fish = sashimi, which we dipped on sauce made of soya and wasabi. this tasted ok even, if first I had to get used with this meal. Now I am waiting, if I have tapeworms or not. :-). In my taste the grilled fishes tasted much better. Tight!

Tammela, Pyhajarvi and Kuivajarvi 23.7.
KariA  and Kake

From 17 to 19 o'clock trolling in Pyhajarvi: not a bite. Then we moved to Kuivajarvi and fished there from19 to 22.30 o'clock: Two legal size zanders 39 and 41 cm.

Brando, Ava 23.7.
ktl  and Fanitz and Hans

Pikehuntin from 9 to 12 o'clock. Heavy rainshowers and wind made fishing a little bit un pleasant. Three pikes 700-1,3 kg with spinnerbaits.

Brando, Ava 22.7.
ktl  and Frantz and Hans

Forenoon holding the heavy rain in the cottage. Fishing the bridge area from 3 to 6 o´clock pm. About empty perches from 200g to 600g. Fishes warm up in the smoking oven now.

Perches from our three hours session

Brando, Ava 21.7.
ktl  and Frantz and Hans

In the morning fishing under the big bridge. Perches from 150g to 350g, 1,5 kg file. Chartreusse grub.

In the evening in rain same place: about 30 fishes, 300g-750g, with living baitfish.

Pyhajarvi of Tammela 20.7.
KariA  and co

Pikes were lazy to hit our lures. Four of them visited our boat. The biggest one 1,5 kg, 64cm. A lot of followers. Again fishing with wrong lures??

Brando, Ava 20.7.
ktl  and Frantz and Hans

One hour in the evening in the harbour, no fish. And one hour under the Ava bridge: two quarter  kilos perches.

Ounasjoki 19-20.7.
Aapi

Testing the new Teno model boat. Trolling all night long. Only 5 joonas (=pikes). Perhaps the water is too warm for trouts and rainbows.

Sysma, Tainionvirta 18.7.
Pete
+ co

Again fishing the Tainio. A nice, silvery, 1.2 kg trout, which had risen up to the river from the Lake Paijanne and two 1,5 kilos rainbows. The fishes took dryflies like Klinkhamer, even if the weather was sunny and clear. The water was like boiled. The trout we caught under the fast rapid in a two metrers pocket with a perch streamer, there perhaps the water is cooler than elsewhere. Rainbows were caught upstream of the rapid with Klink.

Muonionjoki, Vahaniva 15.7.
ktl  and Rebu

In the morning two hours picking 5 kilos cloudberries.
In the evening fishing from the boat in slow stream under the fast rapid. Graylings 41, 34 and 32 cm. And a wild bonusfish a fighter trout 41 cm.

             Rebu and the fighter trout

Lakselv 15.7.
HarriM
and co

Our trip went on to the Lakselv beneath the norweigians hills.. We took the warm weather with us from the Tornioriver. salmons were still hard to catch, even the locals made No Fish trips.

Lakselv is a medium size river known for its huge salmons. The biggest one this summer has been 19,8 kgs, this male fish was caught in the pool two. Anyway you can see more proffessiol looking flyfishermen on riverbanks than normal turists.

We fished three nights the pools one, two and three. The catch was one hit and several jumping fishes seen. Jumping fishes means that there is a lot of fishes in the river, but they are not wiilling to take lures. Perhaps too many nets in the sea and too little water in the river.

We were lodging in the Skoganvarre holiday village. The biggest fish to this day was caught in the lake by the village. I caught with adry fly a grayling 930 g just in the Skoganvarre harbour.

The lake is a excellent grayling water, even salmons rise up to the lake, but it is forbidden to take salmons up here. They have to have possibility to move on to their upstream spawning areas. But the grayling licence to the lake is much cheeper than salmon licences to the river.

The best season for salmonfishing this summer will be the two first weeks of august, only we need more water to the river. You can ask about salmons and conditions of the river directly from Skoganvarre host Markku tel +47-95-847863. Tight lines to everyone. We go on to the lake of Suolu and then to Teno. You will hear from us then!

Muonionjoki, Tapokoski 14.7.
ktl and Rebu

Two hours of fishing in the evening. Rebu caught with spinning with the fly-rig about twenty graylings of which two were legal, over 30 cm. Ktl caught about ten with pupa-flies, but they all were too small.
In the morning to the swamparea to pick cloudberries.

                 Nice graylings from the Tapokoski

Kummaeno 12.-13.7.
ktl  Aapi, Topi, Veikko and Veikko

Veikko and Veikko went upstream to the small lakes for evening- and nightfishing. Topi and Aapi fished the river. They all caught lots of nice graylings. Ktl fished the homelake and had some arctic chars. A kilo fish broke .15 leader.

Veikko the Magic Fisherman caught these nice trouts

At midnight the clouds fell down, north wind and rain began. No fishes anymore to anyone. On Saturday we were holding the rain and waiting for the helicopter to come.

Utsjoki, Kevo 11-12.7.
Johannes and Kari

JoL lost ower two kilos fish when it jumped.  A beautiful place, a real fisherman´s paradise. Now packing and back home to Salo.

Kummaeno 12.7.
ktl  Aapi, Topi, Veikko and Veikko

Ktl found in the morning that there are nice 400g arctic chars in our small home lake. We fished them to fill our smoking box two times. Topi fished in the river a lot of graylings, some nice  trouts and a char.

Topi fished a triple: From the right an arctic char, a trout and a grayling

Tornioriver 11.7.
HarriM
and co

The young fisherman Jouni Linna (in pic left) got good advices in Pello, when fishing with triple Salmon King competiton winner Jorma Ojanpera. The result was  Jouni's first salmon ever. The wobbler was the killing machine called Wayla -wobbler, red back and gray sides.

There are salmon in the Tornioriver, but warm weather makes the fishes passive. The best times are night and very early morning.

Karigasniemi, Teno 11.7.
Vyrtsi
and Maria

Three weeks fishing in the Teno river is over. Now towaeds new adventures in the tributary of Kalix river: Angea-ata. This week has been nice time. The water level in upper Teno has been gooing down and the first schools of grilses have come to the river also in Karigasniemi area.

My week has been more like turistbusiness and photographing.Luckyly the other members of our combinate have taken fishes to be shown to us, too. water temperature is quite high, so the small flies have been catchable. Hook size 10-12 and treble hooks have been the correct ones. The variations of the flies like Marlodge and  Silver&Black have worked well. The fishing will be perfect in the near future. My next report will come from Sweden.

Kummaeno 11.7.
ktl  Aapi, Topi, Veikko and Veikko

Afternoon and evening fishing in two groups. Aapi and Ktl fishing the southern lake area. Tens of graylings, 30-40 cm. Topi, Veikko and Veikko fishing the eastern lakes and rivers. Tens of graylings, some nice trouts and an arctic char.

A arctic char from our home lake

Utsjoki, Patoniva 10-11.7.
Johannes and Kari

Nothing yet in the upper parts of the river in Patoniva. Fishes rose to the fly, but we had to leave when the Ferrariman came. From the lake some nice graylings and two whitefishes.

Kummaeno 10.-11.7.
ktl  Aapi, Topi, Veikko and Veikko

The river is very dry, there are only about 10 deeper spots to fish on five kilometers long area. Still we have caught tens of graylings, 30-45cm. To be able to send this,  I had to climb up to 800 meters.

Vetsiriver 10.7.
SamuliM

Thank you for good tips for Vetsiriver. We had a memorable trip with my brothers. The weather was good, in the morning and the daytime sunny and in the evenenings a bit cloudy.
And fishes we caught. My salmon was 3.6 kg and the other brother caugt 1.5 kg salmon. The youngest one had mostly only experience, but he has a lot of fishing years left.

I caught my fish from the upper part of pool one, my brother's fish was caught near the camp area. There was a lot of fishes: we saw many tailing fishes and many fishermen, who had grilses hanging in their belts.

Our trip was almost totally free of mosquitos. Thank you once more for the tips. Have a nice summer!

Utsjoki, Patoniva 9.7.
ktl and Johannes and Kari

Tuesgay evening´s first session from 7 to 10 o´clock pm. Kari had not even a bite. I took once again a Bomber from a fishes mouth twice. A pause in the cottage. When the spirit is on again, we´ll go on fishing.

Utsjoki, Patoniva 8-9.7.
ktl and Johannes and Kari

Fishing began at 7.00 o´clock pm. Kari had a nice about 2.5 kg grilse on 10 minutes. The fish ran away just on the shoreline. It took a silver and green Minitube. Ktl had two hits on the Red Belt Bomber and Johannes  three.  Ktl was sleepy at 1 o´clock am, the boys fished up to 7 am. A fish, about 5 kg, took Johannes´ Red Belt Bomber in his mouth, But Johannes took it away.

Utsjoki, Patoniva 7.7.
ktl

Fishing from  2 to 7 o´clock pm. One grilse exact one kilo and 51 cm.  Ally´s Shrimp no 8, double.

The grilse which took the Ally's Shrimp

Pitkalanrapids, Karkkila 7.7.
 TomiL

Fishing in the morning from 7 to 12 o'clock. The water was high like in may (+18 c) and a bit muddy, because of the heavy rains.  No rainbow trouts seen this morning. The orange Ant hanging in the sideleader caught some about 30 cm graylings.

Karigasniemi, Teno 4.7.
Vyrtsi and Maria

The days after weekly protection have been rainy in the valley of Teno. In tuesday there were a lot of jumping salmons seen in the river. Some fishes were caught, but mostly the hit was poor. Perhaps the fishes were more concentrated in swimming to the spawning places as in the flies.

I was lucky: in the evening I caught a nice size grilse. Again we can eat fresh salmon! That was my first one this year in Inaririver. The rainy weather fly, Ally's Shrimp number 8 double, was the fly.

The water level in Inaririver is now tens of cm higher than earlier and warmed up to 15 centigrades. When the level begins to go down, then it will be a real salmon festival in the river. There are a lot of fishes both in Teno and in Inaririver.

Merikarvia River 3-7.7.
JaniO

A lot of rain had raised the water level high. There are fishes in the river, but they are difficult to be found. Saldo two rainbowtrouts.

Utsjoki, Patoniva 7.7.
ktl and Johannes and Kari

Johannes and Kari fishing from 2 to 6 o`clock. Both had some nice hits. Kari caught a grilse 900g, 46cm with  Olive Timberjack number 8, treble.

USA, eastcoast, week 26
JakeK

There some news from this arae. i have made many trips lately, but without rea success. The best happening were a flounder 17 inche, some unknown fishes and the crab biting my finger. That hurt!

This week on monday I decided to make a trip. The conditions were bad as possible. Water low and western winds ( here the best winds are eastern and southeastern). So I did not hurry too much: first to the barber and then waiting the ebb and tide to turn. Finally, at about 7 o'clock i walked to the shoreline waiting the evenening to be only practising my casting skills.

When I came to the shore, I saw a lot of birds hitting on the water all the time. And there were a real  blitz on. Schools of bluefishes had hunted small fishes toward the shore, and the bird were eating these small ones.It was funny feeling to fishing with hundreds of atttacking birds. the first cast five meters from the shore and immediate hit. That was about 750g blues. The show was going on still about 30 minutes. I caught three more and a lot of bites, hits and lost fishes. Then came the silence, everything was away like the famous farth in Sahara. I talked with some other fishermen, and they told that the hit was on about two three hours. Poor me, I was there only the last 30 minutes. F... barber! Better to catch fishes as to look pretty!.

Next day I was there again, and the same show was going on.This time the fishes were farther put, and I had problems to reach them with my flyrod. Anyway I showed the beach to three blues, and had some more bites.

These were very interesting trips. Fishes were easy to find out, because the birds showed the places. The schools of fishes moved fast along the shoreline, so there were no need for jogging after a fishing trip. Now the fishes were small, but later in the autumn there wiil be blueses 3-5 kilos. I am just waiting! It is not many times, when icecold beer tastes so good as after running with wading trousers all evening long hunting the fishes. The temperature was only 35 centigrades. in tuesday I was clever enough to change waders to shorts. That is it!

Laajoki, Korvensuu 1.7.
JaniO

1h 10 min disturbing the life of the rapid. Testing my new Surfer Flies. Fishes were not interested in them. With Leech 2 minor trouts. Water level was surprisingly high and colour dark.
