Ayskoski 28.-30.6.
Nikolai and Iiro

Fishing with the Flyfishing Club of Espoo. We two caught 9 trouts, 2 rainbows and a lot of nice size graylings(35-45cm)!!!

In Friday we were watching the fishes to eat like crazy. Finally Iiro caught with Bead Pupa a 50cm trout. It had eaten very small perches. We took our supertinsels and acissora. We cut away most of the tinsels and started to catch fishes. I caught all my trouts with Mini Tinsels (3cm) and the rainbow with Peeping Caddis.

Karigasniemi, Teno 29.-30.6.

JAgain the weekly protection is on, and so we fishermen can rest a bit. You can sleep! Anyway in last minutes before the H-time happened many things. Today many good fishes were caught. The best one is  8 kilos. Some fishes between 3 and 6 kilos and many grilses were caught, too.

I had early wakeup, because I wanted to see the World Cup final. That was worth of it, saldo 3,1 kilos silvery fish. I have tasted it and perfect! And the colour of the flesh, you can not see red colour like that in the baltic salmons. The fly was number4 double brown hook Silver & Black as greenish version. The weather was windy, cloudy and rainy.

The water level is rising, because it has rained many days. Now the level is about 10 cm higher than earlier. A bit brownish colour is in the water, too. The water temperature is 10 ½  centigrades. The forcast tells good news for next week. More about Teno next week, when protection is over.

Vikakongas, Rovaniemi 28.6
MarkoA

Fast trip to Kongas in the afternoon from 17.00 to 19.30 o'clock, when thunderstorm and showers had stopped. +15 centigrades. Water level rising. Lot of caddisflies and mayflies hatching. The river was quiet. I caught only small graylings with pupaflies.

Raudanriver, Rovaniemi 29.6
MarkoA

Fishing from 17.30 to 19.00 o'clock. +10 centigrades. About25 kms north of the Polar Circle. We just stopped and began fishing. This area is so bushy, that fishing is difficult. In the future I will learn this area better. Reason: Graylings 35 and 40 cm plus a trout 44 cm and.. millions of mosquitos!

Vikakongas, Rovaniemi 29.6
MarkoA

From Raudanriver to Kongas. Fishing from 21.00 to 00.30 o'clock. +10 centigrades. Water level was getting higher. Pocket water fishing and good conversations by the fire. Many turists had stopped to overnight. Kongas is a nice camping area. For a fishing turist really a place to "rest". The mirrors gave graylings 32 cm and 38 cm with small nymphs.

Karigasniemi, Teno 28.6.
Vyrtsi
and Maria

Again one more licence fished in Teno. Finally I caught a salmon, and nice one. Six kilos salmon was fighting with me quite a long time. I won! The salmon will be the special quest in our dineer table. The hot fly was a copper tube with fox wing 7 cm. Colours yellow, green and brown.

Other fishermen were lucky, too. Many fishes from 3 to 6 kilos has been caught, and grilses are now in Teno. Certain kind of divide is in Dalvadas, in the areas below  there are a lot of fishes, but upper parts are more quiet. This is fishing from the shore. In Inaririver there are signs of rising fishes. Today I will rest and tie some more tube flies. It is possible to fish two licences more in this week, then begins the weekly protection - at the same time begins the soccer world cup final!

Pernaja 22.6-25.6
JuhaL
, Eki, Sari-Anne, Hanna, Iiris, Jesse and Laura (4years)

Saturday morning was the time to survive out of the midsummer parties. in the evening I was teaching Jesse to cast with reel and rod. I caught with the first cast a 20 cm pike-baby.

In sunday Sari-Anne had a minor under kilos pike and me, too. I tried for hours to teach to Jesse some elemental tricks to catch fishes. Perhaps the fault was in the teacher, because the student did not catch anything. Every now and then I caught some 15 cm perches, but the big ones were in some hide-a-way.

In Monday Sari-Anne and me we tried to fish to catch indigrients for a fish soup. Only three small perches and a kilo size pike. In the evening
Eki and Iiris went fishing: Iiris caught a pike one kilo (the first one of her life) and Eki a small perch.

In tuesday I was teaching Lauralle (4 years) to angle fron the landing. She lost many fishes, but finally she caught a roach!
Later my mother Hanna and me we caught pikes about 800g and 500g.

The results of this trip:
8 pikes 300-2800g plus some small perches. Water temperature was under 20 centigrades. The fishes were caught near by steep rocks and rushes.

USA eastcoast week 25
JakeK

I have been fishing in the sea for several hours, but without success to report. Some half a meters flounders I have caught, but have not seen any stripers. Still waiting this wonder to happen. Anyway, there are always some surprises to come, when you are fishing. Last sunday I was fishing a place, where for some reason were a lot of local crabs. Once a while they were hanging on my fly, too, and I tried to loose them like I could. Finally one of them decided to cut my fingers with its scissors. I have to say it hurt like hell-). Anyway tight lines to everyone!

Nautelarapids 24.06.
JaniO

Two hours, from 21.00 to 23.00 o'clock,  fishing carefully the rapids area. The water still abit dark, but not too much. Really nice fishing! I caught one 40 cm trout and one took my fly ( I forgot to check the tippet, which had worn out while larva fishing). My mate Juho lost two trouts. waiting for the next time!

Karigasniemi, Teno and Inaririver 22.-25.6.
Maria and Vyrtsi

First I have had quiet time. Yesterday we were fishing Inaririver. Teno has already given some grilses. To our combbinate they have taken yet only 2 salmons. Now to the Outarapids!

Karigasniemi, Teno 21.-22.6.
Maria and Vyrtsi

First licences fished in Teno. The water level is low, but still high enough for fishing. Inari river is problematic. The water temperature is now 13-14centigrades, that is ok. In Teno there is now a lot of salmons in sizes 3-6 kilos, even bigger, but grilses are not so many. The first licence showed, that in the river there is many fishes running up from the sea. During the day many people had fish on, about 3- 6 kilos even bigger ones, but the theme of the day was hit and loose. I know only one grilse and two bigger ones to be caught today. I myself had a nice fish on and almost up, too. Just on the shoreline the fish decided, that it is more fun to go on to the spawning places as to my dinner table. The hot flies were Sarvijaakko (Timberjack), 2/0 Black Doctor var, Flashabou Garry, Green Mar Lodge and big tube flies... so, salmons took almost everything you served to them! Tonight we buy new licences and go on to learn salmon fishing.

Parainen, Kyrkofjarden 21.6.
HannuR

Midsummerfishing. 5 pikes 300-4200 g with spinnerbait.

Rovaniemi, Vikakongäs 18.6
MarkoA

Fishing in the afternoon. Heavy wind and cloudy. Temperature 14 centigrades. A lot of tourists following my casting exercise in the "extreme" conditions. A german gentleman filmed with video my fight with a 30 cm trout, which took green nymph. Practically this was No Fish session. My mate Janne was an expert in small fish fishing. A comical trip!

Kaiririver 19.-20.6.
Vyrtsi
and Maria

Tutoring in the flyfishing camp of Finnish Sportfishing Federation. Water level really low. Fishes were not co-operative. Thursday it was raining all day long. Now to the Teno-river!

Nukarirapids 18.6.
Pete

We were fishing carefully Nukarirapids area and found out, that in two three years there will be a lot of trouts. We caught small  25-35 cm trouts and graylings quite alot inthe evening. After 23.00 the higher parts of the river were full of small, tailing trouts. Some of them might have been even legal size, but we could not catch them.

They have rebuilt these rapids in really fine conditions, only the big fishes are missing. Even no rainbows were there. Early in the morning might be the right time, because so many people are moving in the area in the evening and in early nighttime.
Brown and black pupas and perch streamers are worth of fishing with.

Kynäsjoki 18.-19.6.
ktl
and Petrus

Perhaps the weekend Qualifying contest made fishes afraid of everything. Eveningfishing in the Kukonrapid area gave only some minor graylings. Early in the morning thunderstorm made more noise to the fishes. In the morning we tried the Kynasrapid area for rainbows, but we only saw two tailing fishes, that is all.

Virrat, Kotalankosket 17.-18.6.
Seppo, Jari, Pertsa, Risto, Ari, Ahti, Hannu and ktl

VTwentyfour hours of fishing in the neighbourhood of the famous bearhunter Martti Kitunen. He shot almost 200 bears in these woods in 19th century. Fishing began at noon, the eager couple, Jari and Ari, made an immediate invasion to Vehmasrapids. I myself tooned my equipments and had good advices from Pertsa, who's homeriver this was. In the first session both Jari and Ari had some trouts. Everyone had some happenings.

Jari's legal size trout, which took a red wobbler

We ate a delicios dinner in holiday village Lomajarvinen, and the fishing went on in the eveninghours. Again the same couple was the ones, who caught trouts. Some funny things happened, and this hold us others awake. Seppo and Ahti had one about half a kilos pike on the wobbler, when another same size pike hit on his brother. So they had now about one kilo fish on the line. I was flyfishing at the end of the rapid, when a bleak took my nymphfly. When I was taking the bleak in, a nice trout hit the bleak and took it.

Eleven o'clock Pertsa took Hannu and me to the beginning of Koskelarapid. The ids did not have a real mass meeting there like they have later in the summer. Anyway some of them were in the area making nice voices, when they broke the surface. I caught one about half kilos fish with a dry fly. Pertsa and Hannu fought with over one kilos fishes. Pertsa had one on, when the line stopped like in a stone. It was not a stone but a some kilos pike trying to steal Pertsa's id. Finally the pike was the winner. Lucky the fly, Black Foam Ant was saved.

                 Pertsa and the mysterious id

Tuesday morning Jari was the early bird, he caught three nice trout before breakfast. Pertsa took Hannu, Ahti and me to the flyfishing area of Kitusrapids. Viroriver runs through old woods, which is a natural reservate. The views are like in wildernes somewhere in Kuusamo area. Hannu and Pertsa caught some trouts, which mainly were too small. Pertsa had a nice size trout fighting in the beginning of the rapids, but lost it. The trout took Pertsa's own fly called Surfing Board.
This fish was not interested to have his photo, so he went back to the river. Pertsa changed his fly to his streamerfly Perch. Next cast and the line was running. This fish was co-operative, I took the photos and the fish got his freedom. Kitusrapids are one of the finest flyfishingareas I have visited in Southern Finland. So fine, that I forgot to fish there, only photos, but a dry Leech.

Pertsa and a beauty of Kitusrapids

Kynasriver, the Qualification Contest to the Finnish Championships in Flyfishing 15.-16.6.
Nikolai

I myself was ninth. i last really many fishes, i think I have to buy a new rod. The competition was fine organized, and the fishes were big. A lot of broken leaders and ... Water level was going down. Many nice graylings were caught, too.

Results and qualifyers:

1. Saku Laaksonen
2. Mikko Hakala
3. Saku Nieminen

Isoriver 15-16.6
MarkkuR
+ LSUK Team

Four of us drived to Isoriver Vanhakyla to fish saturday night there. We ate some graylings grilled in the sticks. More than half of the legal size fishes we released. 27-35 cm we caught about 40, legal size a bit less than 20. Tapsa Penttila lost a nice trout and me and Olli we lost the biggest graylings of this summer. Small trouts we caught many, too. Number 14 flies were now the right size. Even the big ones just sipped the fly from the surface. Both trout and graylings took caddisfly imitations even in the brightest noontime. (Where are the big trouts?)

Kynasriver 14.-15.6.
MarkkuR
+ LSUK Team

We went with our LSUK fishing club and Fishing institute people to help Qualifying contest organizers in Pomarkku's Kynasriver  Of eight gents and one lady, four were working in the same time, the rest had possibility to fish, when free of work. Our team caugt 11nice size rainbows and one over 40 cm trout. mukavan kokoista kirreä ja yksi mittataimen sekä JP caught some over 35 cm graylings. 12 hours in the competition the competitors caught 56 rainbows and 9 graylings.

In friday night I waited the brownies come up to the Tetsausrapid.koskeen. No trouts and no tailing graylings either. My only fish was a1.5 kg lazy rainbow. In sunday I fishes 1.5 hours session, which gave to me a nice fighting, about two kilos rainbow. VP Jarvinen fished pool number two just when the competition was over and caught a fast rainbow and the trout mentioned earlier.

Karkkila 15.6.
Johannes and Kari
We fished Katlarapid, Pitkalarapid and Maijalarapid. Everywhere the water was really low, so we concentrated in fishing Pitkala area, because we saw there some graylings to take natural flies. There was even in daytime nice hatches and fishes to try catch insects. We caught some graylings and a lot of roaches.

At least I got the biggest pressure blown away thinking about midsummer fishing and the trip to Lapland!

Heinavesi, Kermarapids and Vihovuonne, 10.-13.6.
TomiL

Two nights fishing in Kerma and one night in Vihonvuonne area. In Kerma I caught trouts 42cm (silvery)  and 39cm plus some smaller ones. In  Vihovuonne only one minor. Almost all fishes were caught wit Minitinsel. ome heartbeat I got with about 50cm trout, which took the bleak, which had taken the larvafly. I tired the trout up about 10 seconds, then it loosed the bleak. The Bleak was not able to swimm any more. Water +16 centigrades and quite high, heavy streaming. Wading to the middle island was almost dangerous. Water is incredibly clear, when you are used the clayish color like I have.

Lieto Nautela 16.6.
JaniO

Two hours testing my new rod. Two trouts, the bigger one 37 cm. The water is rising and getting darker than earlier.

The Lake Of Oulu (Oulujarvi), European Championships in Pike Fishing 2nd day 16.6.
HarriM
and Kosto Team

Strict, heavy and tiring Piketrolling European championchips is second time over.

In sunday it was ment to fish five heaviest pikes to the weighting. Our team tried first to fish in the deep water to catch these one meter long beasts.

This tactics was not working, perhaps the pikes did not realize how clever our tactics was. We caught the first fishes, when moved to the area where we caught nice fishes in the first day. We caught a lot of fishes, but pitty all were too light to give good points. Our catch was weighted as 11,750 kg/5 pikes. The best result was 20 kgs even, this means anice medium size of 4 kilos.

In final results our Kosto team was 8th, one step better as last year.

The European Champion of Piketrolling is in the year 2002 Kalevi Saarela, Leo Karjalainen and Risto Karjalainen  from Posio. Second Pekka Onkamo and Seppo Halttu from Rovaniemi. And third last year's champion Pekka Halonen and Eero Vaisanen from Sukeva.

In the first day there were 103 boats to fish and second day 72 boats.

As final conclusion you can say that in the Lake of Oulu there are a lot of pikes, and big ones, too.

The Lake Of Oulu (Oulujarvi), European Championships in Pike Fishing 1st day 15.6.
HarriM
and Kosto Team

The first day was sunny, ideal for holiday, but not for fishing. Pikes were not in the mood. Last year total catch after first day was 2336 kgs and this year about1600 kgs. The catch will be sold to the fishstores, which pay 50 cents/kg. The money is totally used to stock brown trout youngsters in the lake.

After the first day our boat team (Kosto team One: Kari Raatesalmi, Harri Matikainen, Seppo Pietilä, Eila Niemi) was in 8th place, and in the team competition our boats, Kosto Team, was  leading. We, Kosto Team One caught pikes 41,6 kg, biggest one a bit over 4 kg.

The biggest fish of the day was caught by TiuraUistin Team,  10,8 kgs  pike made audience to applaud. Tiura won the company series superior numbers.

Thinking about the Pike EC sunday can change everything. In sunday they accept to the weighting only the five biggest pikes from every team. European Champion will be the team with highest points. We have all the chances to win.

The first day prices have found their winners, now it is time for sauna, and sunday is the time for five big ones. Tomorrow we will know!

Laariver, the Rapids of Korvensuu 13.6.
ktl

The flyfishing club of Vakka-Suomi arranged a not so severe flyfishing competition between 18 and 21 o'clock. There were 19 participants, pitty all were male fishermen. Two days earlier the river was stocked with about 40 nice size brown trouts, so everyone waited good catches. The water is summerwarm and the level is very low. This perhaps made the fishes very careful, when almost twenty fishermen disturbed them. Only two competitors caught a fish.

Jani measuring his 42 cm winning fish. This time 42 cm is 8" 6` Vision flyrod.

Results:
1. Jani Ollikainen 42 cm =Vision flyrod (Team SFM, Congratulations Jani!)
2. Martti Moisio 41 cm =Gold Pan to pan gold in the next competititon

Sysma, Tainioriver 12.6.

Merikarviariver 8.-9.6.
Vyrtsi
and Maria

This weekend we, Maria and me, finally had possibility to go fishing. Because there was the qualifying competition, most of the good rapids of river Merikarvia were reserved for participants. This was in away lucky, because now we had to find some nice, new places. Saldo was all together 9 rainbow trouts for our team, a nice catch. Specially nice was that all the fishes were good size. Only one fish was the size 30 cm, which they had put for the competition. This weekend was genial flyfishing in pleasant company.

Nakkila, Arantilarapids 9.6.
MarkkuR

Nightfishing in  Arantila. Water level was going down all night long, finally it was on lowest level I ever have seen. At 01.00 I caught the only legal size trout, 44 cm. A second, nice one was tailing many times during the night. The best fly was white islandic sheep streamer. Half a dozen chubs, biggest 1,4 kgs, hold me awake till morning. In the morning all the trouts were minors. No rainbows seen.

Merikarviariver 9.6.
JaniO

The second day of competititon, my result: 1st period 5 rainbows and 2nd period two. This ment, that I was seventh among 40 participants. This time it went so.
Top 3 = the qualifiers
1. Iiro Ojala ( Iiro is a member of  team SFM, Congratulations!)
2. Markku Ojala
3. Jarkko Suominen

Merikarviariver 8.6.
JaniO

The first day of the qualification competition. My results: 1st period 7 rainbows, 2nd period No Fish. There is a lot of fish in the river, f.i. Hannu Lehtonen caught on the 1st period 14 fishes and second NF. Many competitors have caught fishes on both periods, this means a hard competition. Anyway, there is tomorrow, too!

Merikarviariver 7.6.
JaniO

SMS at 11.16 o'clock: 45 min fishing and 3 rainbow trouts!

SMS at  12.33 o'clock: 2 more to the last message.

Friday:
Genial flyfishing all day long, the meaning was to find correct tactics for the qualification contest of Finnish Championhips in flyfishing beginning saturday. Total saldo of the day: 5 rainbows caught and released plus, AGAIN, a big one (+2,0 kgs) broke the leader! Some graylings, biggest one 30 cm. Next: sauna and some more flytying!

Merikarviariver 6.6.
JaniO

Puukoski from  23.00 to 01.00 o'clock. 5 graylings, biggest one 31 cm, many small trouts and one nice rainbow, which broke the leader! F....! That was my own fault! Water is summer warm and the level is low. Next some flytying and in the morning back to the river. I was fishing almost alone, only one rod&reel man was there with me.

Lieto, Nautela 6.6.
Petrus

Eveningfishing with three hours licence: Trout 41 cm with orange Leech and two small trouts.

Loimaa 5.6.
Johannes, Tapsa and TomiL

Again fishing rapacious carps in Loimiriver up till 24 o'clock. Then the fishes began rising and tailing, but in the morning we had to go working.
I had a fish on immediately, when we started, but it hooked himself in underwater log. This means once again NF to me and to others, too. Water level became higher and higher in the evening, perhaps they opened the upstream dam a bit. Nice hatches of caddisflies was going on all evening long!

Rovaniemi, Vikakongas 5.6
MarkoA

I was fishing after thundershowers from 21.30 to 00.30 o'clock. Beautiful summernight, temperature +16 centigrades, when I started. Unbelievable hatchings: stoneflies, caddisflies and mayflies all over. I caught with green nymph a trout 34 cm and a lot of small graylings with pupas and nymphs. I used more time in thinking, enjoying and observing the nature than in fishing. A really nice and instructive evening. Time time of nights without night is almost on...Soon you do not know, when you should sleep and when to be awake.

New Jersey area, week 22
JakeK

I was spending saturday evening and night with my flyfishing rod on the seashore. First cast and fish on, but after about two minutes I lost it. Then followed long, silent session. Finally the second hit, and this one was mine. That was a 18 inches weakfish, which I blessed  with my priest, because last time I grilled the weakfish and it was delicious.  5 minutes and again a hit, but it goes. All together, this was my best trip to the sea, a lot of happenings. 01.00 o'clock it was time to finish, a couple of beers in a bar and one hour driving on route 120. My neighbours perhaps loved to hear me washing my waders at 03.00. :-).

Earlier this week I visited a new river. Beutiful place, even if they say that here in New Jersey, there is no quality troutfishing. The river reminded me of Karkkila rivers at home in Finland. The water is perhaps a bit clearer. I saw quite many fishes tailing, but they were not willing to take my flies, although they are put and take fishes. Some nice hits on  #16 red-tag Klinkhamer and finally one small rainbow came to my net, it took yellowish Klink. Just about when darkness fell I drove upstream and saw a nice hatch of mayflies and a lot of tailing fishes. And of course, there was a sign: Private property, NO FISHING ALLOWED. Back to the car and home sweet home.

As summary,  I would say, that here the rivers are beautiful and there is a lot of them. Trouts are mostly put and take fishes, and too small for my finnish taste. That is why I like more flyfishing on the sea area, even if there one  fish to be caught, makes you work incredibly hard.

Espoo Pikku-Vasikkasaari   4.6.
JuhaL

I had fished about one hour, when an angry, 5-kilos (=if my weight is ok), 96 cm pike took the bait. The fish took orange belly brown and green Krokodil spoon. The fight was good, because I had lightened my tools for summerfishing. Later on on the boat came my brother Roope and a perch 300 g. A really nice fishing day!

Lieto, Nautela 2.6.
Jani, Petrus, Juha and ktl

The flyfishing team of SFM had ameeting in Nautela to plan trips of this summer. Jani caught a nice 38 cm trout+5 smaller ones, Petrus 3 and Juha 2 small trouts. Perches, roaches and bleaks were caught, too. Ktl was concentrated upon photographing. Water level very low. A lot of insect hatches: mayflies, caddisflies and dipteras.

          Jani and 38 cm

Parainen, Bjornsund 1.6.
Hannu
and Manu

Eight pikes 0,5-2,0 kg, 10 perches about 200 g each and 10 zanders of which only one was legal size.

Turku, the Lake of Kakskerta 1.6.
Mika and ktl

Trolling zanders from 18.00 to 22.00 o'clock. The motor was called Mika, who rowed all evening. Two sure zander hits and one zander seen, when it followed the wobbler up to the surface. The catch:  2 pikes and 3 perches.

Small pikes did not know, that we were fishing zanders.
