Testing if zanders have any evening hit time. Fishing from 14.45 to 19.15 = 4,5 hours. Ktl 52 zander, of which 8 legal size, and Kari 48 fishes, of which 16 legal size. Total amount one hundred fishes. Nils Masters blue and parrot colors and Kuusamo green color were hot in balance jigs. Kuusamo 40 mm Rasanen-spoon gave some fishes, too.

Kari took 7 over 37 cm zanders from this hole. These fishes travel in eastertime to Lapland.

Kynasjoki 23.-24.3.
MarkkuR
and students of Fishing Institute

Our group was nine persons. We started in friday evening and overnighted in Kynasjoki fishing camp. The most eager ones were up early at six o'clock in saturday morning. They were already fishing, when the sleepy ones opened their eyes. Temperature was in zero in the morning, so no real morning hitting time came. The river is open till Saukua rapid. There is a lot of green algae in upper parts of the river. Fishing is almost impossible there. The weekend saldo was:4 rainbows, three graylings a 41 cm trout and two pikes. The longest rainbow was 53 cm, but it was not the heaviest. I caught a grayling per day. Specially sunday was a perfect fishing day. The sun was shining and I had a nice 40 cm and 510 g grayling to admire on white snow. A beautiful moment to enjoy quality fishing and watch the nature to wake up after long winter.

Velkua 24.3.
ktl, Eki and Jari

Testing zanger jigs. We started at 8.30, a bit too late, because the best hitting time  was at its last moments. Lucky, zanders were somehow in the mood all day long. Total catch was over 130 zanders, but the effectivity relation was once again poor 1:6. Legal size fishes to take with we had only about 25 pcs. Some tens of perches were caught, too. Blue and parrot colored balance jigs were hot, vertical jigs  Pyry and Dishing Table worked, too.

Velkua, Teersalo 22.3.
TomiL

First time fishing Velkua waters. I started at six o'clock and stopped at 13.00. Zander places were easier to find, so most of the time I fished them. Even if I fished with the biggest possible balance jig I have, most of the fishes were under the 37 cm limit. I caught 4 legal size zanders ( about 40 cm) and 16 minors. Perches I had 2,5 kg.

Velkua 22.3.
KariA, Teijo and Harri

11 hours of icefishing. We took perches up and released so much, that we could choose which ones to take with. 200 - 500g perches about 20 kg/ man.

Askainen 22.3.
ktl
, Pena, Jorma, Antero and Ville

A nice and all-around icefishing day. We caught zanders, whitefishes, pikes and perches. Pena had a zander 1,0 kg with vertical jig Pyry, ktl 820 g with parrot colored Nils Masters balance jig. Ville took with small Rapala balance jig a whitefish 1,5 kg, ktl with Nils Master Jigging Shad 1,07 kg  whitefish. Perches 100-300 g we had some tens of fishes. Pikes were caught over ten pcs, the biggest one had Pena (4,9 kg). Pikes there were even too many, and they hit on everything, that was moving.

Pena and 4,9 kg pike. The fight was on over half an hour. Hole 6 inches and the
       monoline 0,25 mm, no leader!

820 grams of zander took a parrot colored Nils Master with a piece of baitfish

Parainen, Garsböle 21.3.
ktl
and Petrus

Eveningfishing on the old hot spots from three to six o'clock. Very quiet. Petrus lost a minor zander and ktl a nicer one. Some small perches and two bigger about 250 g perches.

Hoytiainen 19.3.
HarriM

Three kilos perch fileés from the northern end of the Lake Hoytiainen. Green Nils Master balance jig was the hit machine. Over 200 small perches, the biggest one 499 g. In the evening no hits.

Merikarvia 16.3.
Iiro
and Tommi

In shallow, about one meters water with mormuskas bags full of perches in nice size. The biggest ones near half a kilo.

Velkua 15.3.
ktl, Kari and Harri

We were on the ice at 08.00, which was a bit late, because the morning hit was to end. We had the minimum to take fishes in 250 g. These fishes Kari and Harri had over 15 kg and ktl 12 kg. Smaller fishes we released at least four time so much. Ktl's best hole gave over one hundred perches, but only about ten were to take with. There was no evening session  even, if we fished up to half past seven. Harri had one legal and one minor zander, too. Balance jigs were hot machines.

Ktl's first hole and results of the first half an hour.

Nauvo, Kirjainen 14.3.
Ktl,
Pena and Antero

Checking, if the whitefishes already are in the bay of Kirjainen. Result pure zero. Some tens of small (50-150g) perches to each of us.

Velkua 8.3.
KariA,
Teijo and Harri

The perches were in the crazy hitting mood.  Mostly we caught small ones, which we released. About every fifth we took, still we had about 30 kilos fishes per man to take home.

Kynasjoki, Kukonkoski 8.3.
Iiro,
Nikolai and Saku

It was really fun to cast with flyfishing rod again. The rapid Kukonkoski was totally open, and water level low. Nikolai fooled a about 35 cm trout with yellow Leech, and I proudly landed a rainbow trout 55 cm, with Leech, too. A nice opening of flyfishing season!

Peimari 6.3.
ktl,
Seppo, Kari, Petrus and Antero

Our projectfish was zander. Not a real hit on, mostly small ones were active. Everyone caught a legal size zander except Antero, who had only perches and roaches.. Kari 44cm/880g/ 9 smallies, ktl 40 cm/ 3,  Petrus 38 cm/ 3 and Seppo 37,2 cm (=his first icefished zander). About thirty perches, the biggest ones over 300 g.

Kemio 2.3.

Me and six students went zanderfishing in the afternoon. Because we were first time near Stromma channel it was difficult to find the hot spots. Once again we found how hard zanderfishing can be, we had very few happenings. In all the afternoon only one legal size fish was caught. Hits and contacts even first-timers had, and some minors came up to the ice. After 5 pm there was more action. I got my first legal size zander with Nils Masters balance jig. The next two 45 cm fishes I got at 18.15, when the day was darkening. Nils Masters balance jig in green back and yellow sides, colored roe-hook and some artificial maggots  combination has been good in darkness earlier, too.

Sweden, the Dal-joki 2.3.
KTL, Jari and Harri

The second day of the season. Jari took the biggest one of the season till now 4,2 kg, 78 cm and four seatrouts under the mininum 45 cm. Harri rowed with Ola ( local guide) and caught a nice searun, silvery 3,2 kg seatrout and 1,5 kg fish plus five small ones. Ktl still NF, but had a nice hit on Pingo's Tobis fly.

Jari's 78 cm dark winterling is bigger, but Harri's 68 cm seatrout is more beautiful Photo ktl

Merikarvia, Koortila 2.3.
Iiro
and Tero

Icefishing by the deep sea on the places, where summertime the big perches live. Now poor hit and only small ones up. With balance jigs totally nothing. Ice is 80 cm!

Sarkisalo & Teijo 1.3
KariA and Teijo
On the ice at 2 o'clock pm. totally new waters. We drilled the first holes in 4,5 m water depth and Teijo took immediately two 400g perches. This made us to move deeper waters, but that was a mistake, only small ones. At 4 pm we fished a underwater hill, where teijo caught alegal size zander and I had a small one. Then we thought: Back to the starting place, and there we caught 200-400 g perches about twenty per man. We tried once again in the evening burbot fishing with poor resukts. Again NF.

Sweden, the Dal-river 1.3.
KTL, Jari and Harri

We three Finns and 197 Swedish fishermen in the opening of Dal-river. Harri was rowing and caught 7 seatrouts, one 47 cm, the others under the minimum 45 cm. Jari caught 4 trouts, one 47 cm, one 1,5 kg winterly salmon, others under limit. Ktl some hits but nf. Shorefishing spoons and wobblers were ok. Total catch of teh opening day 46 seatrouts, the biggest 3,0 kg.

Harri's 47 cm seatrout took the lipstick colored Haku-wobbler. Photo ktl
