The team manager and head coach of Russian national icefishing team, Oscar, showed to us two hours the secrets of mormuska techniques. It was a real pleasure to look maestro in work!

Oscar shows, Anton tries to learn and Vitali makes a video.

We got to the ice with motor sledge. In the morning perches were in the mood. Hot depth was 4 to 6 meters, that was all day long. Kari took  fishes in size to take with over 8 kg and we others all together about the same amount. Ktl tried to catch zanders for video and photos. One lost with Spoon jig and two with Merisepe vertical jig. Fishes felt nicely heavy. Finally at 3 pm we found zanders in 8 meters water and 2 meters over the bottom. Kari got one legal size and ktl two minors with Nils masters balance jigs.

Heavy working day. We did all the tricks and yet the result was only 12,3 kg perches. Pity, most of them were too tiny.

Icefishing zanders. It snowed all day long and the wind was heavy, not the most enjoyable fishing weather. We caught small zanders 21 pcs, but legal size fishes hold their mouths shut, the only one , which opened its mouth was Ari's 40 cm zander.

Parainen, Tammiluoto 26.2.
Ktl, Aleksandra, Oscar, Anton and Vitali

We drilled tens of holes in front of rushes. It had snowed ten centimeters  in nighttime and all day long we got snowshowers. This probably made fishes careful. Oscar had two one and half kilos pikes and Anton one minisize. Irritation colored big balancejigs were the lures. Extra catch was some perches. We tried the twillight hour to fish burbots. With no success.

Teijo 24.2

, Harri and Teijo

Jigging burbots five hours in the evening. Teijo had a 1,28 kg male fish and lost one under the hole. Harri 2,2kg, 1,45kg and 0,55kg males. I myself had NF. In reality I had four burbots, because my friends told , that they do not eat fishes, which look like that. So I have to cook some delicacies. The trip was very OK:  Teijo got his first ever icefished burbot and Harri's fishes were first ever he has caught in the sea.

USA, Florida viikko 7

No success this time eiter in my project "bonefish by my own". I spent four fishing sessions , while having holiday in Florida.  Tuesday  10.2 the first try early in the morning at  Mary's Beachilla in Key-islands. The catch was beatiful photos of the sunrise. In the afternoon I waded in  Long Key State Parki. There I had first eye contacts with bonefishes. Between a large seaweed area there was wagging a nice bonetail. Hands shaking I casted my fly to the fish. It was perfect cast, but first strip and the fly hanged on weeds, before a slightest hit of the fish. Bone did not like action like that and swam slowly to deeper waters. In the sunset time bonefishes came to shallow waters in small schools. You could see in calm water their backfins to draw stripes in the surface.. They were so unbelievable careful, that when I got to casting distance they disappeared. These could have been bonefishes, but 100 proof sure I am not. :-(.

In wednesday I went fishing tarpoons with a fishing guide in  Key West. He picked me up ayt 3 am and back in the harbour we were at  7 with only visual fishcontacts. On the grounds we saw nothing. Fishes came not to casting distances, some big fishes were jumping, but some hundred of meters away from our boat. It was familiar stories my guide told after the session: Wrong time, bad luck, last week they were here etc. The time was perhaps a bit early, the prime-time is in May-June. In the harbour, when I had packed my rods and took first cold beer, of course, I saw a slowly cruising tarpoon in harbour light just by the dock.

Thursday was again time for self made fishing trip to a bone ground by  Ohio-bridge. The place looked perfect. I saw a nice bone to cruise just a bit too far from my casting abilities. Carefully wading I tried to reach the fish. Then the sun went behind a cloud and I could see nothing. I could not even try to cast. I felt finally +x#. Ok, it was nice to look pelicans and a seahawk fishing. I even saw a lobster in shallow water. perhaps I should have called it to supper table with me.

I planned to call this lobster to supper table with me. Photo JakeK

In Thurday evening I had a short one hour session in Bahia Honda State Park. I had heard that it should be a hot spot. I was not very please, when visited this place. The ebb made water troubled so it was impossible to see the fishes. casting blindly I caught some small  snappers,so finally my balls were out of the kettle. ( A finnnish proverb: If you do not catch a fish, you have to put your own balls in the kettle.)

KThis trip was more like learning the places and techniques. It incredible difficult to even see bonefishes in shallow, clear waters. The fish looks shiny silvery when lifted from water. This color makes it difficult to see a fish in the water. The silvery sides work like a mirror and the fish disappears from your eyes in weeds like a cameleont.  Perhaps next time I will be lucky enough! If you visit this area of Florida, take a brake in the marina by 75 miles sign. In front of the harbour there are aschool of half tame tarpoons. To visit the dock costs a dollar and a cup filled with tarpoon food costs 2 bucks. Absolutely the cheapest fun you can have on Key-islands.

I went to try a couple of hours burbots. It has been three weeks since I was last time fishing. No happenings. I had luckily possibility to taste burbot soup in Joensuu on our winter holiday. My mother's companion Eki had caught two weeks ago many burbots in  Pyhaselka with  crown jig.

Velkua 21.2
KariA
and Harri

Harri called me saturday evening and asked , if I am willing to go icefishing again after the long fishing trip to Aland. It took about two second to make the decision, I saw in my mind big perches and that was it. We were on the ice at 8 pm.  The beginning was promising. In old hot spot, first hole and first perch, this 340g was finally the biggest of the day. Fishing carefully this area I caught in  2-4 m depths about  6 kg fishes in size to take home. Then the sun came out of the clouds and springtime lights filled the views. It took an hour to test all possible combinations of balance jig and colored hooks, only pikes were active. I lost some lures in their teeth. The afternoon was then a catastrophe. Only 50 -150 g perches hit on my lures. Harri caught some more fishes to take with, when he changed on the line a big vertical jig Nautilus with fish eye as bait. Harri's total catch was 7 kg.

ATTENTION:
IT WAS SHOCKING TO SEE, THAT THERE STILL ARE IDIOTIC FISHERS, WHO LEAVE THEIR TOO SMALL PERCHES AND TRASH LAYING ON THE ICE. THIS KIND OF ACTION SPOILS THE REPUTATION OF ALL  ICEFISHERS. LOCAL PEOPLE CAN NOT UNDERSTAND THE WASTE OF FISHES AND LITTERING THE NATURE.

Zanders are not in the hitting mood at this moment. I caught only two fishes, lucky, the other was legal size. I lost four fishes, all the contacts with balance jigs. The second zander was smallest in my fishing carrier, only 20 cm. First time in my life I got a ruff with balance jig.

Our morning project was first to shovel away snow for the parking place for our car. We walked to the ice along the paths made by deers and hares. I thought to make some nice photos of zanders, but life is not so easy. We caught only about twenty perches, the biggest near 500 g, but no zanders were in traffic even, if we fished very good old zander places. After this kind of trip you appreciate the days, when fishes are co-operative.

Aland, Farjsund 19.2.

Testing the area south of the bridge of Godby. Small perches were everywhere. We found finally fishes in better caliber on a underwater hill by a seamark. In the morning fishes were 300 g, but when Ktl and Kari had to leave to ferry harbour, Seppo and Heikki began to catch almost half a kilos perches. Today even pikes were active, we lost three lures in their mouths. Seppo had the biggest perch 460 g. Total catch was about ten kilos in size to make filees.

A short forenoon fishing trip. Perches played hard to catch. Quite a lot we had small ones, but filee size fishes only about twenty. The big ones were just 0,0002 ton. There were many fishers by the seamark, but it did not look like they catch a lot. Two pans of perch filees and outdoor life in rain was our result of the morning.

Icefishing zanders with my daddy from 13 - 17.30 o'clock. We caught  7 fishes (28 - 40cm) only one legal over 37 cm. We lost 7 zanders, too. Mosts of the fishes and losts happenend in the same hole! We fished in about ten meters water.

Aland, Angosund 18.2.

Icefishing in probably the finest pike waters in Finland. Pingo caught a three kilos pike with Nils Masters 12 cm orange balance jig. The fight is on video from the hit to the catch. Seppo took his icefishing record 3,08 kg pike from the underwater hill in the middle of the bay. Kari, our jodling perch dog found perches in the slopes of the passage. About three hours gave 5,3 kilos fishes in size over 200 g plus minors. Pikes were not co-operative in the evening either. Perch files in cream and fromage sauce was perfect dinner. Thanks Seppo!

There is no justice in fisher's life. For a long time the weather was perfect for fishing burbots, a dark, rainy and windy evening. I thougt, that tonight I will catch the big lady burbot. When I got the hot places, there were two elderly gentlemen. Both had plastics bags full of nice burbots, some were still kicking on the ice.. I thought: Now is my turn, too! Three hours of fishing and not a smallest contact!  When the darkness fell, the two gents lost their touch, too. There were perhaps ten other fishers and we all had quiet sessions in darkening evening. Perhaps the burbots do not like the extra traffic, but spawn in clear daylight.

Aland,Farjsund 17.2.
Ktl, Pete, Kari and Pingo (only pm)

Fishing from 8.30 to 16.30. In the morning perches were mostly tiny. Kari made 68 fishes to make a fast visit to the world over the ice in first hour. In the afternoon we found better size fishes in 3-5 meters water. They hit on green Forelli and Rapala balance jigs. Pingo had a legal size zander, too, and ktl a too tiny one. Kari and ktl had both possibility to shake hands with seatrouts, but this time fishes were wiser than fishers. The result of the day was 16 kilos perches in size take, the biggest ones a bit over 400 g. It rained all day long!

This was a wonderful day to icefish. The weather was even more beatiful as a bride. We caught fishes enough to make nice meals. All the active fishes fishes were in shallow water. The deepest hot point was in three meters and we even got perces in one meter water.

Intensive fishing from 10 pm to 4.30 am with my father. The day was really dark and foggy. We caught 4 zanders of which two were legal size  40 and 43 cm. Extra catch was some perches medium size 200g. Kaikki kalat tasurilla. All the fishes hit in  7-10 meters depths.

They had put 250 kg rainbows into the lake in the beginning of january, and only about twenty licences is sold since. Still the lake was quiet, not even the echoload showed any fishes, only some lone swimmers. Fishes swam just under the ice or in midwater. That is why the baitpaste fishers have had poor results. Me and daddy tried with Mutu-Leech and Rasanen spoon, but with poor results. Ice was so thick, that you could just drill throught it.

Aland, Stemmern 16.2.
Ktl, Pete,Kari and Pingo (only to noon)

We worked hard all day long. In the morning perches were mostly small. In the afternoon we found rote nice fishes, too. Forelli balance jig with green back and yellow sides and red stripes was the hottest lure. We finished at 5 o´clock pm. Kari´s biggest was 470 g and Ktl´s exact 600 g. Fishes in size to take with we had all together 9.8 kg.

Parainen, Granvik 14.2.
TomiL

Icefishing perches was once nice hobby, because the weather was pleasant. I wonder why there were so few other fishers. I had to drill a lot of holes. Only some perches I could catch per hole. Place near the shore lines gave more fishes than the underwater hills. Biggest perches 250 g, total catch 5 kg.

Velkua 14.2.
KariA, Teijo and Harri

In the morning we had to seek fishes. In the afternoon I moved from underwater hills to shallow 2 meters shoreline waters. There were the big ones: 750, 540, 510 g and 300-400 g fishes about a 10 kg bag full of. Teijo and Harri had both 100-400 g fishes about the same amount. Smallies came to look freh air and went back unnumerous amount. These three big perches I got from the very same hole. Otherwise the good size perches were splittered.

Fishing with northern lights on by the castle ruins in Kuusisto.  -14°C centigrades and chilly wind from northwest made me doubt the whole project when stepping out of my car. Anyway I went to the ice and caught in first hour 900 and 1100 g male burbots and two small ones like froggies. I fished with crown jig baited with the tail of smelt. Rest of the time I admired the fires on the sky. Nobody else was fishing in the area, no wonder, so chilly cold was the weather!

Velkua 10.2.
Ktl
and Pena

Perches hit on jigs very poorly. In the morning there was a slight preying time, when some fishes per hole were caught. In daytime and afternoon it was awonder, if two perches were caught in one hole. Pena caught with vertical jig three minor zanders. Ktl's perchbag weighted 2,5 kilos and Pena's about double, the biggest ones a bit over 300g. It had snowed about ten cm on the ice in early morning hours. This perhaps shut the mouths of perches.

Kaarina, Kuusisto 7.2.

, Jukka and Matti

Icefishing burbots in saturday evening by the ruins of Kuusisto castle. With me were two friends from lake-area of Finland (first timers in this job). We fished about three hours. Matti had a nice hit, but lost the fish, because the reel brake was too loose. I caught a  2,480 kg male fish. Fishes were interested in crown jigs with a piece of smelt as bait. The milt of the male was still hard, so the spawning time lets us to wait at least in  Kuusisto.

, Osku and Vaiski

Three hours in the early evening researching the burbot traffic: Very quiet:  Ktl had one 300 g frog size burbot, which did not give reason to take camera out of the bag. Vaiski lost a better fish just onder the hole.  Osku and Ktl had some hits, too.

Kemio 7.2.

Icefishing perches first time seriously in my familiar holiday house waters. All normally hot underwater hills and half island noses were empty. Summertime hot jigging spots, the underwater slopes of islands, gave anyway 8-9 kilos perches. The biggest ones only about 300 g. Fishes were not in the hitting mood. One hole gave only max two fishes. Balance jigs were the lures today, nothing with verticals. Ari tried to fish zanders all day long with no success.

Trying to learn icefishing zanders. I caught my first ever fishes with this method. Both were 40 cm. The other one took Rapala balance jig and the other Rasanen 4 spoon. Extra catch were some perches.

Kari, Eero ja Petrus

Absolutely the weakest trip this winter to icefish perches. Fishes in size to take with held their mouths shut. Only tiny perches were in biting mood. They took both vertical and balance jigs. Ktl had on 10 cm balance jig a 9 cm perch-baby. The "sure" were almost totally empty, too. Only kari had over ten fishes to take with. His biggest perch was 490 g.

Magical half a kilo is not even near. Kari's perch was 490 g.

Naantali, Luonnonmaa 6.2.

, Seppo and Antero

Icefishing in the afternoon perches with balance jigs. Hard northwest wind felt chilly specially on hands, even the temperature was a bit over zero centigrades. Perches were in 5-7 meters water and really near the bottom. We caught two to three hundred grams fishes  totally 6,8 kiloas.  Antero had one over 37 cm zander. Two friends, whom we met on the ice, had icefished zanders with vertical jigs all day long. Both had some legal size fishes and some minors were released.

Four hours fishing in front of the sugar factory harbour, but only one perch hit on my balance jig. Echoload showed a lot of fishes in 6 meters, but they took nothing. I  even tried with mormuskas!

Vartsala 2.2.

Again trying, if burbots are already spawning. Fishes were not very active, but both of us had a burbot. Ari caught a male 2,6 kg fish and I got a bit under one kilos female. Fishes took robber spoons with fishbait. They hang on the spoon hooked under their chins, so the spawning is not really on yet.

Vammala, Rautavesi, in front of Hotel Ellivuori 2.2.
MikkoO

I was guiding a german married couple, who had won a trip to Finland in a competition of German TV. They wanted to come to Hotel Ellivuori to icefish. Walking on ice was first time experience to both of them. They even loved more to drill holes in the ice than to fish. We had to seek fishes a while, but finally we found perches and roaches. Fishes were in very careful hit, so we had to fish with mormuskas and small vertical jigs with colored hooks. Every fish got a happy welcome yelling and were photographed carefully.
The winter of Finland showed its best sides, and these people had an unforgetable experience and got a new hobby.
P.S. When talking with my clients, I found, that to go fishing in Finland is easy and cheap compared with Germany. Let us enjoy this freedom!

Parainen 1.2.

We tried to fish two hours burbots in the evening. Total NF (= No Fish). Not even the burbot magician of our Fishing Institute, Pia, had a bite.
