JanJ

Dear all

In the last days we have received questions concerning booking of ferry for the return from Bornholm. The questions is concerning whether it will be possible to catch the night ferry from Bornholm to Køge on Saturday, May 6, at 23.30. The answer is yes.
The type of ferry used on this depature is recommended by BornholmsTrafikken for trailers.
On Sunday there will be two departures for Køge and one for Ystad with the same type of ferry.
Informations concerning rules will be published on December 1. The entry form will open on December 15. The first 300 boats enrolled will participate.

The sun, warm weathers and the aeration machines have worked fine! The icecovers are away, only some soft ice is floating  in shadow places.

They put new fishes a week ago, and the newcomers are hitting nicely. I flyfished two hours and left behind quite many schooled rainbows, which now know hooks. I wondered, that I did not catch any old fishes. They have learned to be careful! One really beautiful brown trout I had. The place is now open with normal timetables, so let us go fishing!

Aland, Mockelo and Kungso 13.-14.4.
Ktl,
Arto, Olli and Markku

After the Seatrout Meeting we had possibility to fish in wednesday evening a couple of hours in Mockelo.  Markku and Olli flyfished and waded eagerly, but with poor results.  Ktl and Arto studied fishing whitefishes wit relatively nice results. Total catch in two hours was 7 fishes of which two biggest were over one kilo. As a sidecatch a nice 54 cm, about one and half kilos seatrout took on Inkoo green-silver spoon. The fish showed some temperament with three high jumps.

In thursday we fished in Kungso. Olli flyfished, ktl and Arto served worms to whitefishes and spoons to seatrouts. We saw a lot of tailing trouts, but they were unwilling to hit. Some followeres and hits we had, and Arto caught a minitrout 20 cm, which he carefully released. We should have been there at sunrise time! Three whitefished swallowed worms.

Helsinki 9-10.4

In rainy saturday I got my whitefish season opened with 1400-1500g fish. The fish ran like a trout, which I first thought it was. The beginning was promising, but this was my only fish of the day. In sunday we went to the same place. My friend had in the morning a 1200 g and I a  500 g whitefish. An elderly couple caught a 1700 g fish and that was it. The schools of fishes apparently swam away. Anyway a nice weekend even if we did not catch fishes in numbers like from the archipelago.

Aland, Hammarudda 8.4.
Ktl, Pete, Timo and Tölle

First in the morning we had to clean up the cottage, so we were on the playgrounds after noon in Kungso. Ktl began fishing whitefishes. First came two small 300 grammers. Finally there were a school of bigger fishes. One over one kilo fish was lost nearby shoreline, the hook was not deep enough. Next even bigger fish broke the hook! Then, finally, a nice about one kilo fish was in the net! It was the smallest of these three.

Boys went fishing in the innest bay area, where sun warmed up the water. Seatrouts were tailing all the time, even many at tje same time. The bottom is there so soft, that wading is impossible, so these eager flyfishers had to choose spinning equipments instead. Timo finally saved the reputation of our team. Mighty 2,95 kg trout took on yellow Forelli lightened spoon. Tolle fished a while by open sea area. The result was one lost seatrout and a fine 2,8 kg rainbowtrout with slendid fins. TIn the fight the fish was more in the air than in water. When Tolle came back to the bay, it took two minutes, when he had a 2,4 kg seatrout with pale blue  Kopsu spoon. Ktl broke the line with a hard fighting trout. Perhaps a small wind knot in the microdyneema line? Timo and Tölle both succeeded to loose a seatrout. In the evening pikes came to the area, too, Timo, Tölle and Ktl landed and released one each.

Hartola, Tainionvirta 8.4.
OlliT Nikolai and Lauri

We had possibility to fish a to us new place in Central Finland guided by lauri, Who has fished Tainio already in many years. The fishes are mostly brown trouts, but they put some rainbow in the river, too. Graylings are the third salmonids. In the morning we could fish in all peace. Hard trying and in Keijularapids a 1,5 kilos hit on a brown streamer. Next to Ekorapids. With the same fly I caught a 50 cm trout. It had in the stomach the nymphs, larvas, a dragonfly nymph and three sculpins. Next place was Leirirapids, where Niksu got a fish, too. After five minutes fishes his reel cryed, when a 52 cm trout ran downstreams, five minutes and then into the net. Tainionvirta was a good experience. We dicided to renew our visit, when the flood is down and water clear. We wait for enjoying flyfishing with light rods and small flies.

Aland, Hammarudda 7.4.
Ktl, Pete and Timo

In the morning two hours trying to fish whitefish in Mockelo. It rained and the wind blew nastily and the result was pure zero. The eveningsession happened in Kungso from three o´clock to nine. The weather was much better and warmer, even some mosquitos were flying. Timo had a nice about three kilos trout on about half a minute, but lost it. The fish took a yellow streamer. A while later Timo caught with the same fly a 2½ kg pike, which he released. Pete had over ten followers both on flies and spoons and a couple of hits. Ktl had a trout on in two kicks time on a pink-white zonker. We saw many tailing trouts, too. The evening gave 5 whitefishes.

Aland, Hammarudda 6.4.
Ktl, Pete and Timo

First in the morning two hours in Burvadsviken. Pete had a hit on a streamer. No whitefishes. Then till noon in our homebay. Pete had in first casts small school of following trouts. Then again very quiet. Sunshine and mild western wind. From 3 o´clock to 5 pm fishing whitefish in Mockelo smallboat harbor. Five fishes, the biggest 700g. Next to the western bay troutfishing. Tolle, Pingo and Bosse came with us and Uffe with his boat. There were too many other fishers in this area, so these friendly locals took us to the nearby secret troutisland where we fished intensively to 9 o´clock with flies and lures. You could even smell and taste seatrouts, so very good the place looked out, but nothing happened.

Aland, Kungso 5.4.
Ktl, Pete and Timo

In the morning fishing the nearest bay area from 9 o´clock to noon. We saw not a fin of seatrouts, Timo tried whitwfish, too, and the result was the same. The wind blew 14 m/s SW and mixed up the water. In the afternoon wind had calmed a bit and the sun was shining. Pete had a follower and Ktl a hit and a follower on a same cast. We met Tolle at  6 pm. He had fished all day long on the Reef but had no contacts with trouts. Next we tried to fish whitefishes on the halfisland against the Westharbor. Pingo came later with us and caught immerdiately a fish. Pete had a couple of nibblers and Timo had a flounder. After the sunset it was time to go home.

Kimito 4.4.

Again fishing whitefishes wwith my father from 5 to 8 p.m. There were so many fishers on this beach, that I counted 11 rods standing there. A fisher had caught in the morning two fishes. The weather was perfect, calm, sunshine and the water  0 centigrades. I have had my best catches, when water has been2-3 centigrades. In the late evening I layed on the rocks and saw a tailing fish! I thought it might have even been a whitefish. The fish tailed about three meters fron the shoreline. My father has seen some years ago a school of whitefishes swimming nearby shoreline.
Shouls I next time to try dryflyfishing  ;)

Uusikaupunki, Lepainen 2.4.
JaniO
and Ari

Icefishing whitefishes with Ari, because I found no open water for flyfishing. I tried to learn the art of this fishing and have some fresh air in two hours. All together we were four fishers on ice.The only one, who caught whitefishes (when I was with), was Ari with his two fishes. The ice was at least 30 cm thick on these places we visited.

OlliT,
Ari, Ville, Kimmo and Jani

Small graylings were active. About fourty of them visited our nets, the two biggest were 35 and 45 cm. Legal size trouts we caught three. The day was quite cold, so there were not many stoneflies hatching, and those few we saw disappeared in nice whirls. Dryflies and black nymphflies worked. In Ari's flybox was the best stonefly hatch on...

Central Finland, Kapeenkoski 30.3.
JaniH

Trouts have been now active when water levels are falling down. We are waiting for first real stonefly hatches! Now you can see them every now and then, butt soon they will be stepping on snow everywhere. In wednesday 30.3. I saw in Kapeenkoski some hatching stoneflies and some tailing trouts, too. Mostly flyfishing was trying to reach the bottom with pupas and larvas. I caught two trouts (42 and 46 cm) with these flies. Spinnfishers in our group caught three legal size trouts (41-57 cm), two with  Rapala Cd-7 and one with Trout Quiver - spoon.

The floods are falling down, so the water level will soon be optimal in all rivers of Central Finland. In Kapeenkoski the level was ten cm lower now as last sunday. I heard news from Konnevesi and Viitasaari areas, that the main hatches of stoneflies are not yet on even there. I presume, that next week will be THE TIME! Always we have to remember, that the nature, specially stoneflies, can be mysterious...

Bosse Jansson icefished in monday in Farjsundet a mighty zander: 5100 g and 80 cm .

Two finnish guys caught in friday in  Kungso  6 seatrouts and again in saturday 8 more. Most of the trouts were fine two kilos class fishes!

Kurre from Fiskarboden caught in sunday in Kungso two nice trouts. On western shores people have caught several fine seatrouts, but I am missing exact statistics.

Icefishing perches has been perfectly excellent in early mornings and late evenings, but daytimes have been more quiet.

A new try in the afternoon from two to seven p.m. Cloudy weather perhaps made whitefishes less careful as yesterday, there were more fishes swimming in shallow water than earlier. I caught six fishes, lost two in the hole and saw several fishes swimming by my mormuska.

Testing the evening hit of whitefishes in southeastern area of the Lake Pyhajarvi from 3 to seven p.m. Four hours gave only two fishes, but they were nice size, about 500 g, compared with normal catch in this lake. The ice was about 40 cm, and a bit soft in upper parts. No other fishers on the place, and very few old holes, too, on this old hot spot.

Ktl,
Jari, Timo and Rami

On Harvaluoto ices at 8 a.m.. First zanders were co-operative, and some legal size fishes were caught, and of course, too many smallies.

At noon ktl went home to live as sofa poteto and others to Askainen to search evening hit. Jari caught 4, Rami 7 and Timo one legal fish there. We stopped fishing at six p.m.

Pargas 26.3.
JakeK

The Gate is open and some fishers were there, too. No signs of whitefishes to anyone.

Pargas 23.3.
TimoK

Icefishing perches from ten a.m. to seven p.m. The working tactics were fishing with balance jigs in front of rushes. Most fishes were found in one and half to two meters waters all day long. Two thirds of my catch I released, and those some occasional, kilo class pikes, too. When the temperature is over zero centigrades like today, even in icefishing C&R is possible. I had one plastic bag more than full of perches in size 150-350 g. Many of the fishes were full of roes, so the utility procent in fileting was poor. The files weighted only 1960 g.

Aland 18.-20.3.
Pingo

Friday was a fine icefishing day. Several nice +500 g perches were caught. Heavy wind and snowstorm made living on ice arctic. You could see only some meters forward in snowshowers.

In saturday and sunday the weather was better, and still perches hit like fools. Every fisher caught about 50 -80 fishes. The ice is off from the bay of Kungso and  Hammarrudda area! That means, that easter  will be time for seatrout fishing. Weather forecast promises warm  and mild western winds, perfect !!!!!!!!!

Sakyla 19.3.

In the photo you can see the content of the stomach of one whitefish I caught last saturday. Fishes are eating really small plankton fauna, which we saw in the holes, too. It is really difficult to imitate these animals, so small, about one mm class they are. Photo Olli Toivonen

Piikkio 19.3.
Ktl
, Mikko and Mara

We were on ice at half past seven a.m. and worked hard to half past five p.m. Northern wind blew freezingly, but the sunshine was already nice and warm in the daytime. In the morning there was some hit on, daytime was quit quite, but zanders got again active in late afternoon. We caught a lot of small fishes, which we released. Funny how some neighbours took in their bag everything, that had fins! Mikko and ktl walked a long roundtour on ice trying to find fishes. Mikko lost a mighty zander in four inches hole! He could not use hjis normal six inches drill, because of pain in shoulders. Mara stayed all day long in a small area and got fishes all the time. The results today: Mara with Savonia vertical 7 pcs, Ktl with Karismax balance jigs 4 pcsjnda Mikko with Koster vertical 2 pcs.  Ktl had the biggest of the day 840 g 46 cm, the fish had on sides teethmarks, eveidently a seal had bitten it.
Mostly the ice was ok 25-40 cm, but in narrow passages the drill went through only with some turns.
BE CAREFUL ON WEAK SPRINGTIME ICES!

Sakyla 19.3.
OlliT
, Niksu, Lauri, Kalle and Mr. X

We icefished all ady whitefishes on windy  Pyhajarvi. Niksu, Lauri and I were on fishing places at half past seven a.m., Kalle had already then five nice fishes on ice. So we three were at least half an hour too late from the morning hittime. My own start was ok, but too thin lines and being too unexperienced in whitefish ice fishing, I lost first five fishes in the tube of holes. ( !! When I learned correct techniques, even I caught some fishes. Kalle caught some more fishes during the day. Our total catch was about 15 fishes. Light colors worked fine both in mormuskas and flies. Niksu told the aforism of the day. He was taking his daytime naps in the car, when I went to wake him up telling, that fishes are on hit now. Niksu:" What? Did you catch a whitefish? Where? From that drilled hole?".:)

Kimito 16.3.
OlliT
and Ari

Icefishing zanders from eight a.m. Five first hole gave immediately  40 and 46 cm fishes with vertical jig Merisepe. Ari had one minor and two hits. Rest of the day was more dead with zanders. When we were leaving, Ari told to me to make one more hole and hopefully with a zander in it. I drilled, let Merisepe sink and immediately there was a fish on! It was the biggest of the day 47 cm. The fish took on Merisepe baited with apiece of smelt. Merisepe won today Uto 3-0, so my trustee zander lure is now changed. We had quite a few happenings, but we still caught fishes enough to make a nice meal.
