              The Fly of
  December and January

                 Pingos Tobis

Text: Pingo and ktl
Photos and dressing: Ingmar "Pingo" Eriksson

Ingmar "Pingo" Eriksson is one of the most experienced seatrout flyfishermen in Finland. He lives in Aland, and his home waters are located on the western parts of the main island Aland. It is possible to fish seatrouts there all year round, even in the wintertime. The sea of Aland seldom is totally covered with ice. This winter the freezing is possible, because the winter is about one month too early. Important food in winter for seatrouts are Three-spined sticklebacks and Small sandeels. Pingo has developed this fly, Pingos Tobis, and its variations to imitate these species of fishes.

Pingo's advise for flyfishing seatrouts in winter:
1. Make the first casts  from from yhe landside ofthe shoreline. Fishes can be hunting in one foot water.
2. Do not wade on the fishes
3. Fish the mirrors of the surfs.
4. Cast along the shoreline
5. Golden Hour = One hour before sunset and some time after that is the hottest time.
6. When airpressure, temperature and waterlevel are on plus, it is time to go flyfishing!

The four steps to dress Pingo's Tobis:

A
s Bodymaterial I use Orviks e-z body braidia, the tail is dressed with marabou, the thread is size 3/0 and the eyes are dolleyes fastened with  epoxy glue.

1. The backhook is important to eye up, so the hook points straight backwards when the front hook is passed through its eye.

2. The bodytube is passed on the hooks.

3. Wet the marabou, then its is easy to make a small bunt. Push marabou into the tube. Fasten the connection with 3/0 thread and safe the tail with superglue.

4. Fasten the body in front. Fasten the eyes with epoxy. Color the back with waterproof marker.

Simple fly to tie. Double hooked fly imitates small sandeels and the fly with one hook is Three-spined sticklebacks.

Dressing:

Hooks: Salmon hooks with eye up #1-6
Body:   Orvis e-z body braid
Tail:     Marabou
Eyes:    Dolls eyes from hobby shop
