Lesson 3: THE LEECH

The LEECH The Leech is an unorthodox streamer with no wing. The significant parts of this fly are the puffy marabou tail and hairy, palmerhackled body. Originally Leech is from USA, where it is very popular fly when fishing wild rainbow trouts and their relatives. The Egg-Sugging-Leech represents a leech, which is stealing a grain of spawn. The english Wooly Bugger is similar fly as the Leech. In Finland The Leech is a very popular fly, a kind of universal fly. You catch fishes with Leeches in rivers, lakes and even in the Baltic Sea. Small, so called Mini-Leeches are effective for graylings. Lead headed Leeches are widely used as ice-fishing and UL baits.

The Dressing Hook

Streamerhook: 3-4x, # 2-14
Tail: A bushy bunch of blackmarabou with a stripe of flashabou on both sides
Rib: Oval silver tinsel
Body: Black chenille
Bodyhackle: Black Cockfeather Fronthackle: Black
Cockfeather Head: One turn orange chenille Try different combinations of colour, too Next week 21: the Zonker

How to tie

Base the shank with thraed. Turn 6-10 turn lead wire on the front part of the hook.

Fasten the lead wire with thread, a drop of varnish or super glue makes the joint stronger. The weight on the front part of the fly, gives to Leech its pecking swimming.

Rip out of a black marabou feather (nowadays turkey) 3-4 bunches of herl and united them so, that the tips. Form a bushy tail. Never cut the tips with scissors, use Your fingernails to rip the tail into the right form.

Wet Your forefinder and thunb with saliva and shape the tail like in the picture.

The lenght of the shank is the right lenght of the tail. Fasten the tail. As extra attraction You can add a piece of flashy flashabou on both sides of the tail.

Next a piece of chenille and oval silver tinsel is needed. Pick out of the chenille hairs away so, that the corethreadis visible about ¼ ".

Fasten the corethread exactly in front of the tail. Fasten the tinsel all the way under the shank.

Turn the chenille on its place with side-by-side turns. Leave about 1/8 " free room for the hackle and the head.

Fasten the body hackle. Turn it backward to the tail about 4-6 turns. Leave the hackle hanging in the pliers. Turn the tinsel forward so that it crosses the turns of the hackle.

Fasten the tinsel with turns of thread and half hitch. Cut away the extra tinsel and hackle.

Fasten exactly in front of the body the front hackle.

Turn the fronthackle on its place with 3-4 side-by-side forward turns. Take the hackle between the fingers of Your left hand and shape the hackle with thread pointing a bit backwards.

Fasten the corethread of a piece of orange chenille.

Make one turn with orange chenille in front of the hackle. Fasten it. Make a half hitch. Make the whip finish knot. Varnish the thread on the head. The Leech is ready.
