                    The Fly of Mars

          Klinkhamer Stonefly

Text, Photos and Dressing: ktl

Mars ans april are the time of early stoneflie (Taeniopteryx nebulosa) in Finland. The chitin cover of the fly is first clear red. When the fly dries up the color turns darker, too. This is why you have to tie many different reddish color variations of this fly, red to dark reddish brown. Klinkhamer style fly with parachute hackle sits nice on the surface film, and heavily ribbed backbody swims under the film.

Fasten polypropylene as wing.

Fasten red wire. Dub the backbody of red wool.i

Tie the rib. Fasten the hackle in the root of the wing.

Dub the front body with peacock herls. Force the wing upwards with herls.

Tie the hackle with 3-5  turns. Make the finnish knot and fasten it with super glue.

Dressing:

Hook:          Mustad Curved Nymph/Dry # 12
Wing:          Polypropylene
Rib:             Red wire
Backbody:   Red wool
Hackle:        Brown cock kukko
Frontbody    Peacock herl
